Spayathon for Puerto Rico Round 6 - 6 Days.

814 surgeries performed in Humacao.

For Round 6 of Spayathon for Puerto Rico, our team returned to the municipality of Humacao. Being the third round in the same location, we had tempered our expectations, but were blown away to find that the need for spay/neuter services was still very apparent.

From February 21-26, our team arrived every morning to face some of the longest lines we have seen yet at Spayathon, with patrons revealing they showed up to secure their space as early as 6pm the night before (our clinic doors open at 6:30am). Every day, we reached our full patient capacity. And every day, we were inspired anew by the sheer number of people so dedicated to ensuring that their pets receive such vital veterinary care. Thanks to the teamwork of our Spayathon coalition partners, patients we weren’t able to accomodate in Humacao were guaranteed space at alternate locations.

The Spayathon initiative continues to be incredible proof that the people of Puerto Rico want to address their island’s stray animal crisis. By the end of the week, our clinic (with our partners Helping Paws Across Borders and The Humane Society of the United States) completed 814 spay/neuter surgeries, bringing The Sato Project’s total number of animals served to 5,816. The coalition as a whole completed 8,276 across the island, allowing Spayathon to break a world record with 52,171 animals over all six rounds.

When compassionate organizations and individuals collaborate on a shared goal, it is amazing what we can accomplish. Three rounds of Spayathon remain so stay tuned for more info on the next clinic in November 2020.
