Safety. Refuge. New beginnings.

Welcome to ‘Sanctuary by The Sato Project’, our new temporary home as of July 2022.

Our ‘Sanctuary’ is not a place of permanence. It is a place of healing, a place of respite, a place to start over and have a new beginning. The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘sanctuary’ as “a place of refuge and protection”. That is exactly what our property will be for every sato that comes into our program. It serves as their temporary home, where they can feel safe for the first time. It is where they will live while they complete their vetting protocols and rehabilitation before they take their Freedom Flight to a forever family.

For The Sato Project as an organization, this property is also not permanent. It only marks the beginning of the next chapter of our rescue efforts. Since the founding of The Sato Project in 2011, most of our dogs have stayed at our partner veterinary clinic, with only some lucky satos getting moved to foster homes when available.

This situation was never ideal. While our clinic is safe and loving, it can be a stressful environment. It was always our dream to have a place of our own; a place for our dogs to truly decompress - to run, to play, and to be reminded, no matter how much abuse they have gone through, that life can be good again.

‘Sanctuary by The Sato Project’ is that place for the next 5 years. It is our chance to get our feet wet and finally have a space of our own while we build out an extraordinary, trailblazing property that will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean.

This next exciting chapter will ensure The Sato Project can continue our mission in permanence.

This current property has many of the aspects we always dreamed of having for our dogs:

  • Large runs for dogs to safely run and play

  • A maternity suite, where new mums can give birth and care for their babies in peace

  • A dedicated isolation area, where rescues can be quarantined and kept safely away from others, but still be comfortable themselves without spreading infectious and contagious diseases.

  • Dog pools, ball pits, tunnels, and more for lots of playtime

  • 24/7 care from our staff

Over the past 11 years, we have proudly made over 6,000 satos’ dreams come true. Now, thanks to the incredible support from our community, we are finally making our own dream come true, too.
