The Sato Project is expanding our team at an exciting moment of growth for the organization. The Development & Communications Director will report to the President & Founder, and will lead strategic direction and overall management of The Sato Project’s fundraising and marketing functions. The Development & Communications Director will build on our current fundraising and marketing successes to develop sustainable funding and consistent messaging for our growing organization. Having grown from a two-staff-member organization with an annual budget of $500,000 in 2014, to 8 staff and a $2 million budget in 2018, The Sato Project is at a critical juncture and point of growth.

Key responsibilities will be: a) hands on stewardship, cultivation and solicitation of philanthropic gifts, with an emphasis on major donors and institutional and corporate support b) the creation and implementation of effective strategies to acquire new donors and improve retention of individual donors, and c) the development of communications strategies and platforms that seamlessly integrate development, marketing and program messaging. 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for the Sato Project’s mission of animal rescue and welfare; the vision, energy and operational skills to build on and transform the organization’s fundraising and marketing functions; and a track record of cultivating and managing relationships with a portfolio of donors.

Key Responsibilities: 

I. Fundraising – 70%
Objective: Spearhead and strengthen The Sato Project’s development and fundraising program to develop a sustainable and growing funding stream.

  • Create and implement an annual development plan, with support from President & Founder, Director of Operations, and Board of Directors, that specifies fundraising strategies and measurable short and long-term goals for maximizing major gifts, foundation and corporate grants, special events revenue, and individual donor contributions.

  • Serve as chief fundraiser, securing gifts from major donors, corporate partners and institutional funders, managing and growing The Sato Project’s revenue portfolio; Create individual major donor strategies including research for solicitations and prospecting as needed for the President & Founder.

  • Grants: Identify and pursue grant opportunities from appropriate foundation and corporate sources, with grant-writing support from Development Associate; manage reporting cycle to existing institutional funders and maintain relationships with foundation representatives.

  • Events: Lead strategic development and execution of special events to increase support from individual donors and corporate sponsors, including our annual fundraising event in NYC as well as smaller-scale donor house parties. We are expanding our team at an exciting moment of growth for the organization.

  • Develop and execute a calendar of donor communications including fundraising appeals and donor updates.

  • Manage, mentor and coach the Development Associate, and develop the overall infrastructure and personnel team for the development program.

  • Act as a liaison for the Board and lead its board recruitment and fundraising committee, engaging Board members as appropriate to push initiatives forward

  • Provide regular reporting of revenue, progress and successes to the Director of Operations and President, participate in annual budget development, and present relevant updates at board meetings.

II.  Communication, Marketing & Public Relations – 30%
Objective: Implement the communication, marketing and public relations efforts of the organization to promote overall brand awareness.

  • Working closely with the President & Founder, oversee the ongoing development, refinement and scaling of The Sato Project’s communication plan and guide the strategy for all communications, website, PR messages and collateral to consistently and effectively represent the organization’s brand and articulate its mission.

  • Oversee a process to update the website and provide more dynamic and engaging content.

  • Oversee growth and strategy for social media channels and converting followers to subscribers and donors; leverage volunteer and/or consultant resources to support these goals as appropriate.

  • Lead the development and execution of fundraising and communications materials including annual reports, newsletters, pamphlets, and press packets, so as to effectively convey The Sato Project’s mission and goals.

  • Supervise the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral.

  • Other related duties as needed.

The successful Development & Communications Director will be an experienced and strategic fundraiser with strong knowledge of how to design, manage and scale development activities. S/he/they will have a record as a trusted partner to senior leaders, a respectful supervisor, a diplomatic negotiator of internal change, and a compelling representative to potential donors and partners.In addition, s/he/they will posses:

  • Passion for The Sato Project’s mission, and a commitment to leading the organization through its next phase of growth (3-5 years).

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising, including experience in prospect research, individual donor cultivation, stewardship, public relations and budget planning; demonstrated success in soliciting gifts in the five to six-figure range.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills; strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience supervising and managing staff and teams.

  • Experience in executive-level relationship building; management skills with diverse constituent groups, staff, board members, volunteers and donors.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage a variety of concurrent projects.

  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in CRMs.

Salary and Benefits:
$75,000. Benefits include the opportunity to work remotely up to three days per week, paid-time off, and a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and life insurance.
