Charlize

Charlize took her Freedom Flight on July 5th, 2020. Thank you to all of her Foster From Afar donors for helping us change her life forever.

Charlize is our miracle dog. She was rescued the day after Christmas - dumped at a gas station. We found her shivering with fear and unable to walk. Her sad demeanor after years of neglect broke our hearts. She was rushed to the vet and required hospitalization for almost two weeks. To add insult to injury, x-rays revealed a large mass in her lungs. The vet concluded that she had terminal cancer and gave her a prognosis of only three to six months left to live. While it broke our hearts further that she would never get to experience a forever family of her own, we had to settle on feeling grateful that she would at least be able to live out her remaining days comfortable and loved. But then something unexpected happened: Charlize started gaining weight and playing with other dogs. Her hospice mom, our ‘Nani’ Daphne, exclaimed, “There is no way this dog has cancer!” We repeated the x-rays and she was right – Charlize’s lungs were clear! Whether the original “mass” was in fact an infection that cleared up or this was a miracle, we may never know, but we do know that this girl was ready for the new life that she deserved.

When Charlize’s mom saw our first social media post about Charlize’s rescue back in December, she contacted us right away and said, “If she is ever able to fly, I would love for her to spend the rest of whatever days she has left on my couch.” When her mom came to pick her up at the airport, she had her entire car decorated in Charlize’s honor. She had been waiting for over six months to meet her new family member and now couldn’t wait to celebrate her arrival. Thanks to your support, Charlize is now spending her days happily wrestling with her doggie sisters in RI, in addition to naps on the couch. After struggling to survive for almost a lifetime on the streets of Puerto Rico, Charlize—now Charlie for short—is finally living the life she deserves.

Charlize was so excited to meet her new mom at the airport. See below!
